Both tools focus on the filesystem level which usually is not a problem because bad sectors tend to get handled by the drive itself. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button. To get the device names, first run diskutil listwhich lists all drives and filesystems and then run fsck -fpy /dev/IDENTIFIERfor the actual check.
